Roof specialists are among the more important contractors in any construction work. Aside from determining the strength of material, choosing appropriate designs and provisions, they also provide technical maintenance and repair work from the simplest to the most complex tasks without requiring massive renovation work.
It starts with the design. There are at least dozen roof architectural design to choose from, the most common of which is the gable design where roofing materials are arranged in two oppositely slanted formations. These popular and typical designs are ideal for mid-sized houses with simple interior design since it helps protect roof from direct impact of rain while allowing better ventilation inside the house. Meanwhile, shed and saltbox types are best for smaller infrastructures while hexagonal designs are best options gazebos since these designs are easily detachable infrastructures. For extensions, retractable roof awning designs are popular sights in Singapore homes. Roofing specialists in Singapore often recommend the roof design and material based on various factors like the customers’ budget, annual weather conditions and other hazards that are likely to affect the quality of the roof and over-all safety of occupants. Roofing specialists also have to match material and design since not all materials complement certain designs. For instance, flat roof designs are ideal only for concrete roofing structures usually used for homes with rooftop functionality. Obviously aluminium sheets cannot serve the same purpose. In terms of materials, asphalt shingles are popular are the cheapest type of roofing material and relatively the one easiest to install. However roof specialists in Singapore rarely advise this type of material because it fades easily, has short durability and is a poor insulating device. They also need additional reinforcement like fiberglass or organic materials such as cellulose for increased durability which makes them more expensive in the end. Clay and concrete tiles on the other hand are extremely durable but are heavy and difficult to install and therefore also not popular in Singapore. Wood shingles and shakes are also cheaper options but are also not endorsed by roofing specialists Singapore since they are fire-hazard materials. Synthetic roofing products from rubber, plastic and polymer roofing gives homeowners more aesthetic options for a variety of styles but these are often brittle or fragile and therefore least durable. Most of these materials also require additional roof awning work and are therefore costly in terms of labor and additional material requirements. Instead, metal roofs are often recommended by Singapore roof specialists due to their weather-resistant properties. Although they are slightly more expensive that other types of material, they are lightweight, recyclable, and generally last longer. Newer materials such as slate, are becoming favourites of many roof specialists in Singapore since they are distinctive, and elegant and just as durable. Most roofing specialists in Singapore however recommend additional framing and roof awning work for slate roofs. Recently, polycarbonate roofing sheets have also become popular not just in offices but in many homes. Polycarbonate roof sheets in Singapore are commonly transparent materials which reduces the need for lighting. Although they usually require sophisticated roof awning works for braces and support, the cost may be augmented by electricity savings in the long run.
